Our Academy provides schooling for children with Autism and other Learning Exceptionalities. Our programs are designed to foster each child's academic achievement. We are committed to providing the highest level of care, support and education by using suitable teaching styles to meet each child's individual needs. Our goals includes supporting our students so that they may be able to attend suitable classes in the appropriate academic environment with their peers. Our academy follows the Ontario Board of Education Curriculum and guidelines, with suitable modifications tailored to each individual. Our staff are qualified both as teachers, and as Instructor Therapists trained in Behavioral Therapy. Staff work with our senior therapist to collaborate the best possible curriculum for your child.  Classroom sizes are no more than five to six students to assure children are given the attention they need. Through our therapeutic and educational program all children are able to grow, learn and reach their ultimate potential.

FTWLC Academy follows curriculum similar to the Ontarion Mintry of Education however, what makes us unique is that we offer learning skills which are over the expected school curriculum. Our students are  taught through an ABA approach.  We ensure each child receives individualized programming with the use of error correction procedures, targets and so much more to ensure success!  We will implement different styles of teaching such as Direct Instruction which is a language based teaching program for children with many different learning styles. Direct Instruction assists in teaching children the fundamentals of learning while working on comprenhension and processing skills.

We offer Part Time and Full Time Kindergarten through Grade 8 currently.  For information regarding our JK and SK Program, please download here.

Kids are all so different   which is why we use different curriculum.  Curriculum such as Direct Instruction, Ontario Ministry of Education and The ABLLS are a couple of the different teaching methods used with our children.

ABLLS - The Assessment of Basic Language and Learning. The ABLLS is a device for assessing skills in children with language and learning deficits.  It examines 25 categories of behaviour across a wide range of specific skills sets.

Help Strands looks at different levels of a child's development.  It assists in the development of programming starting from birth.

Direct Instruction is a scientifically-based model of effective instruction developed by Siegfried Engelmann in the 1960's. It is a teaching method which encourages students to love and be skilled at reading, writing and math, understand what they read and how math works; and to use skills at reading, writing math and comprehending to achieve objectives in other subjects (e.g., history and science) and activities.
Direct Instruction Is Not Rote Learning and it is not about teaching just the Basics.  DI focuses more on higher-order cognitive learning. Direct Instruction is Not All Teacher Directed. There is more teacher direction in early lessons, especially within the first part when students are learning new material and most of all Direct Instruction is developmentally appropriate.
The basic components of direct instruction are:
1. Setting clear goals for students and making sure they understand these goals.2. Presenting a sequence of well-organized assignments.3. Giving students clear, concise explanations and illustrations of the subject matter.  4. Asking frequent questions to see if the students understand the work.5. Giving students frequent opportunities to practice what they have learned. If you are still not sure, give it a try.  You will be pleased with the results.
If your child needs support with Language, you have come to the right place. At our Academy, our students receive the support they need to learn. Many children struggle with Language, Math, Reading, Comprehension, Writing and so forth.  At the Brightstart Academy, we utilize different teaching styles which will help your child to learn and maintain skills.
Students who enter our program must have a placement test prior to starting. The reason for a placement test ensures your child is starting at the appropriate level of support. Placement tests occur in language programs, reading and/or comprehension, writing skills, math skills and more. You can arrange a placement test by speaking with us directly.
